The History


The game of the carrom sinks own far roots in ancient ages and lands. The word is believed that “carrom” drifts from the name of a native plant of Indonesia and the called India Karambal that the Portugueses adapted in caramboliera, calling its carambola red fruit. It could be born thus the carambola, tight relative of the carrom. But history and legend are melted and thus it is told of a sure Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, viennese champion of carrom and the dedication to the same game of the Buddha Siddharta. In 1970 the presidency of the All India Carrom Federation passed in the hands of Mr. Bangaru B. Babu, of Chennai (Madras). It was the first one to having a total vision of the Carrom and engaging spirit and body in order to introduce the game to world-wide level. Thanks to its efforts and in spite of some defection from some countries whose tradition of the Carrom too much was radicated in order to accept modifications in the regulations, Babu finally succeeded to re-unite in the 1988 representatives from tens of countries nearly all the continents in the International Carrom Federation.
In Europe the first countries to answer with enthusiasm to the callback of the Carrom were the Germany and Switzerland. In order every year eighty, were many international tournaments and the first intercontnental tournament had place to Zurigo in 1985. In order nearly ten years the presidency of the F.I.C was in the hands of the Swiss Martin Meier whom together to Bangaru Babu it tried to put into effect the ambitious plan to make to enter the Carrom in the world of Olympic Games. Today the President is the anglo-Indian Krishan Sharma who in order to celebrate the ten years from the foundation of the ICF has organized in 1998 a tournament between the champions of all the nations and a banquet in the House of Commoms of the palace of Westminster, the English parliament. Between the leaders of the FIC for the first time now there is also an Italian, Elisa Zucchiatti, named vice president to the conference carried out to London in 1997. Elisa, together to its connects European, also has founded an European confederation with the scope to promote the game in Europe and the engagement to organize an European goblet anniversary.
